Shore Excursion
to Didyma Miletus Ephesus (with Lunch)
Duration: Approximately 7 hours
Following an early
departure from the pier, the first stop will be Miletus, an ancient city
located near the present Akköy at the mouth of the Buyuk Menderes
(meander) River. Miletus owed its importance to its position on the
trade routes. It was one of the largest cities in Anatolia with a
population of between 80.000 and 100.000. Highly prosperous, it founded
many colonies and was the home of the 6C BC philosophers Anaximander,
Anaximenes and Thales, the town planner Hippodamus and architect
Isidorus. Having a prominent position, Miletus became the most important
port in this area and it was the most active member of the twelve cities
of the Ionian Confederation. In the 7th century BC Lydians besieged the
city. The city was then controlled in turn by the Persians, Roman and
Seljuk Turks.
The next visit after Miletus will be
Didyma. The world Didyma meant "twins" and it was associated by some as
being the meeting place of Zeus and Leto to have their twins Apollo and
Artemis. Didyma was famed as a prophecy center dedicated to Apollo,
which served a similar purpose as the Delphi of Anatolia. It was not a
city but a sanctuary linked to Miletus by Milesians with a 19 km/12 mi
sacred road. Midway through the tour lunch will be served at a local
restaurant serving simple but delicious Turkish specialties.
After lunch break drive to Ancient
Ephesus,we visit the Gate of Magnesia, Girls?High School, State Agora,
Odeon, Bouleterion, Curetes Street, Town Hall, reliefs of the Gods
Hermes, Apollo and Zeus, Monument of the Roman Dictator Sulla, Hercules
Gate, Temple of Hadrian, Celcus Library, Hellenistic theatre, Temple of
Artemis. Visit Turkish Handycraft Production Center and shopping
facilities.
At the end of the tour, you will return to Kusadasi port.

A motorcoach tour from the port of Kusadasi to the Shrine of the Virgin
Mary is a scenic delight, with wonderful views of the Byzantine fortress
in Selcuk and the Temple of Artemis. From your window, great vistas of
the valley can be seen as you travel a long and winding road to the
picturesque Solmissos Mountains. The House of the Virgin Mary is
considered by the Vatican to be the final resting place of St. Mary, and
a small shrine, dedicated to her, was found in the ruins when the house
was first discovered.
The
shrine is still cared for by the Lazarist Fathers, and Mass is
celebrated at this spot every day.
You will see Ephesus
en route to the statue of The Virgin Mary. From here you will view the
upper gate of Ancient Ephesus.
Take a scenic drive around the town of Selcuk and view its rich history.
You'll have a moment to relax in your
motorcoach before arriving at your next stop, a
Turkish & old
Greek.
Continue your minivan tour through the
picturesque countryside dotted with vineyards, olive orchards, peach
trees and cotton plantations to the lovely Sirince (she-RIN-jay). This
Aegean area has less than a thousand inhabitants and most of the houses
date from the 19th century or earlier.
Originally, the village had been named Çirkince, or "ugly place," which
was a deliberate attempt by its Greek inhabitants to hide its beauty
from foreign intruders. But after WWI, when the Turks became the primary
inhabitants, they changed the name to Sirince, which translates roughly
into "pretty" or "charming place."
In the heart of Sirince you are free to explore the wonderful local
marketplace and souvenir shops where handmade crafts, such as lace,
embroidery and locally produced olive oil, can be found. And be sure to
discover the Byzantine Church, which has been lovingly restored, as you
tour the village.
A visit to a wine shop is an opportunity to raise a glass and toast to
the local harvest.
You'll participate in a wine-tasting event, savoring the flavors of the
famous local fruit wines, produced with peaches, blueberries and grapes
grown in the surrounding orchards and vineyards.
With just one sip you'll understand why, despite its diminutive size,
Sirince has become a big name in the wine industry.
As a part of village experience you may visit one of the
wieving place where all the Turkish carpets are wovens.
