Shore Excursion
Milan
Duration: Approximately 11 hours
An early morning departure
from the pier takes you on the 2-hour journey to Milan, the financial
and commercial hub of Italy. Upon arrival in Milan you will be met by
your local guide and begin the tour of this city at the famous La Scala
theatre - Europe's most important opera house. Built between 1776 and
1778, it was here that works by Donizetti, Rossini, Bellini and Verdi
were first acclaimed and where Arturo Toscanini conducted and was
artistic director for many years. The neo-classic building, damaged
extensively during the World War II, was reopened in 1946. Visit the
adjacent museum housing a rich collection of manuscripts, costumes and
other memorabilia from the theatre's history. Passing through Galleria
Vittorio Emanuele II, you will arrive at Piazza Duomo. The Milan's most
magnificent monument is the Duomo (Cathedral). The massive marble Duomo
is one of the largest churches in the world, with its 135 spires and
more than 2,200 sculptures decorating the exterior. It is a beautiful
example of gothic architecture. The Madonnina, a gleaming gilt statue on
the highest spire, is a Milan landmark. A typical Italian lunch will be
served in a leading restaurant. After lunch, you will proceed to Sforza
Castle. Built in the mid-15th century by the Sforzas, lords of Milan,
this imposing fortress was damaged repeatedly in sieges before
restoration began in the 19th century. Further damaged during World War
II, it has been repaired and today houses a museum complex which
includes the Museum of Ancient Art. One of its reassures is the
unfinished Rondanini Pietà, the last work of Michelangelo. You will then
reach San Babila area, where famous fashion boutiques are located. Enjoy
some free time before reboarding your coach for the 2-hour drive back to
Genoa and the ship.
Note: Comfortable walking shoes are
recommended. Tour order may vary to avoid congestion.

Sights of Genoa
Duration: Approximately 3 hours
Behind the sprawling port of Genoa lies one
of the country's most interesting cities. The evidence of past wealth
and power is still visible in its many monuments, great churches,
countless palaces, lavish courtyards, and rich art treasures. Departing
the pier proceed through Via Gramsci to the old eastern gateway, Porta
Soprana, with its 9th century wall. Here you will proceed to tour the
old city on foot. Beginning at Porta Soprana, the same as it was when
Christopher Columbus passed through it on his way to the sea, walk to
the house of Genoa's most famous citizen. The house was rebuilt during
the 18th century on the ruins of a formed building owned by the
navigator's father. Continue to the Piazza San Lorenzo where you will
come to the magnificent black slate and white marbles façade of the San
Lorenzo Cathedral. For many centuries it was the scene of the principal
acts of both church and state. Entering the Cathedral you will be
impressed by the size of the interior and the richness of its design.
Renaissance frescoes depict moments in the life of St. Lawrence, to who
the cathedral is dedicated. Following your visit, pass the church of San
Mateo en route to De Ferrari square and the recently restored Ducal
Palace. Built in 1590 on 11th century foundations, this palace was the
seat of Genoa's maritime republic. An extensive 17-year restoration was
completed for the 1992 celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Columbus'
discovery of America. It has been restored to its former glory. Reboard
your coach and continue through Via Fieschi to the International
Exhibition Palace. Proceed to Via XX Settembre Genoa's main thoroughfare
commemorating the liberation of the city by Italian troops on September
20, 1870. You will enjoy some free time before returning to the ship.
Note: There is a considerable amount of
walking on this tour. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Order
of tour may be reversed.
